Thursday 6th July afternoon is devoted to visiting La Rochelle and its surroundings.

3 options are available for this social program:

  • Pedestrian visit of La Rochelle city
  • Boat tour around fort Boyard
  • Bus tour at Ré Island

To help you decide, here there are some details about each option:

Pedestrian visit of La Rochelle city (old town, medieval towers, port)

La Rochelle, a city located on the western coast of France, has a rich history dating back to the 10th century. It was an important seaport during the Middle Ages and played a major role in the Hundred Years' War between France and England. La Rochelle was also a significant center of Atlantic trade during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the city is a charming mix of old and new, with a vibrant old town filled with picturesque streets, stunning architecture, and a bustling port.

With this option, you will enjoy 2 hours of the unavoidable English guided walking tour of the city: "La Rochelle unveils itself". Explore the heart of the Old Town and the Old Port of La Rochelle, a city with a rich history as a prosperous and independent merchant city. Immerse yourself in the memories of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the antics of Henri IV, and the siege led by the Cardinal of Richelieu. The impressive architecture and lively atmosphere of the streets and terraces are sure to captivate and enchant you.

Departure at 3PM                              Return scheduled at 5PM

Enjoy a drink on the port at the end of the visit

Boat tour around fort Boyard

Fort Boyard is a historic fortification located on a small island off the coast of France, which played a significant role in the defense of the Charente estuary against invaders in the 19th century when cannons positioned on land didn't have a far enough range to crossfire. The fort has a rich history, and visitors on boat can appreciate its impressive architecture while taking in the stunning views of the Charente-Maritime region.

Since 1990, Fort Boyard has gained fame through its association with the popular TV show of the same name. This TV show involves teams of contestants competing in physical and mental challenges within the walls of the fortress to win prizes. Known for its dramatic setting and physically demanding challenges, the show has become a cultural icon in France and has been adapted in over 30 countries, totaling over 1 800 episodes.

The boat tour has a commentary in English and will last approximately 2h30. It will leave from the Old Port of La Rochelle, then pass in front of Fort Boyard and the island of Aix, before returning to the city.

Departure at 3PM                              Return scheduled at 6PM

Enjoy a drink on the port at the end of the visit

For information the boat company is engaged in a sustainable approach (French design and conception of boats, recycled engine oils…).

Bus tour at Ré Island (winery, beach, and medieval port)

Ré island is a beautiful island located off the north of La Rochelle in the Bay of Biscay. The island is known for its stunning beaches, picturesque villages, and charming atmosphere. The island has a rich history that dates to the Roman times, and its fortifications were used to defend against invaders throughout the centuries. This scenic island off the north coast of La Rochelle is renowned for its stunning beaches, medieval port, and wineries.

Discover the beauty of Ré island with our carefully curated bus tour commented in English. This tour offers to observe the famous beaches, vineyards, and charming villages and ports. The tour also includes a visit to the Domaine Arica vineyard, where you can enjoy an English guided tour of the vineyard and wine-making process, followed by a tasting of four wines. Then, choose between 1) a stroll on the beach of La Couarde and 2) a guided walking tour of the historical capital of the island, Saint-Martin de Ré, and its UNESCO-listed citadel. To finish this afternoon, the bus will bring back the group to La Rochelle.
