Conurbation of La Rochelle

As you travel along the coast, the little limestone cliffs that characterise the north of the urban area surrounding La Rochelle give way to beaches and marshes full of birds. Inland you will find the rich farmlands of the Plain of Aunis. 17 municipalities around downtown La Rochelle snuggle into these landscapes in a series of towns and villages that have managed to keep their authentic character despite the population explosion and urban developments of the past 25 years. Together, they form a territory with a population of 147,000 that opens out onto the Atlantic Ocean.
