The 24th international conference of the French Society for Scottish Studies will focus on the question of the coastline in Scotland and the relationship between Scotland and coastlines overseas.
.
This interdisciplinary symposium, positioned in the field of the blue humanities, aims to explore what the coastline represents in Scotland – where it is omnipresent – and the country's centuries-old relationship with this liminal space.
Researchers will approach the Scottish coastline as a place of residence and transit; an inspiration for textual and iconographic representations, and a hybrid space that connects land and sea, as well as Scotland and overseas territories. The coastline is also a space where various actors—both local and external—operate: individuals, authorities, and economic interests, who sometimes organize into networks to unite this fragmented space of multiple islands and shores, as well as distant coastlines. The symposium will also reflect on the development of coastal tourism and the use of marine resources, which today are at the forefront of the challenges of climate change, and on the coastline as an enduring component of Scottish identity.
