Abstract: An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is a steam cycle in which the old fashion steam working fluid is replaced by organic compounds such as refrigerants and hydrocarbons. ORCs utilize clean energy resources, that are geothermal heat, solar radiation, ocean thermal stratification, heat from biomass combustion and waste heat from various thermal processes. This is a fast growing technology. Large systems of more than 400 kW power output are commercially available while systems with lower power output are still under development. This technology offers new opportunities for industries to recover part of their heat wasted, for increase of power output for existing thermal power systems as biogas plants and alternative solution for clean power generation. This lecture is a presentation of ORC principles, main applications of the technology with emphasis on waste heat recovery and few facts about the market.
